It's a good time to work for General Motors.

The automaker will award hourly workers with bonus checks of up to $12,000 for helping the company shatter sales records last year.

GM turned a North American profit of $12 billion in 2016, up one billion dollars from 2015. The company's 52,000 union workers will receive profit-sharing checks as part of a formula adopted under the United Auto Workers contract in 2011.

GM's Powertrain plant in the Town of Tonawanda is home to about 1,700 workers, while about 1,400 people work at GM's Delphi plant in Lockport.
