BUFFALO, NY (WKBW-TV) - Shoppers at a local Wegmans got a big surprise over the weekend when a deer came charging into the store, running through the aisles.
A doe and her fawn went crashing through a vacant store window, then into the Wegmans store on Military Road after being chased by an eager buck.
The deer eventually made its way out of the store, but with a deer population higher than ever, and mating season in full swing, residents can expect experience more close encounters.
In a seperate weekend incident, a large buck became disoriented Sunday morning and dashed into traffic along Route 5 in Lackawanna.
The deer on Route 5 found its way through one of the old Bethlehem Steel Plant buildings and out onto the highway. Fencing along either side of the road prevented the frightened deer from finding a way off the stretch of busy highway. Motorists put their four-way flashers on and watched as the deer tried to find an opening in the fenced off area...running for quite a distance down Route 5.
People traveling to the Buffalo Bills game finally saw the deer run through the opening at the former Mittal plan heading into Woodlawn.
In October, Troopers responded to 102 incidents on the Thruway involving deer. The accidents mostly happened between Rochester and the Pennsylvania state line.
Troopers advise not swerving if your headed for a collision with a deer, but slowing and pulling to the side of the road after the strike and calling 9-1-1. Trying to avoid the accident can cause the loss of control of your vehicle, possibly striking another car or traveling off the road.
