ORCHARD PARK, NY ( release ) Members of the Orchard Park Fire Company raised money and purchased toys to help out the US Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots drive by going out over the weekend soliciting donations through a traditional “Boot Drive”.
The Firefighters rose close to $8,000 which they took to Toys R Us for a shopping spree. They were able to purchase over 500 gifts, and turned them over to the Marines Monday afternoon.
Orchard Park firefighter Christine Petrie stated, “The donation box for Toys for Tots was placed in the fire hall, unfortunately there is not a lot of foot traffic and no public access, so we decided to do something about that”.
Firefighters spent Saturday working the intersection of N.Buffalo and Quaker, and Sunday working an area near the stadium. They brought empty fire boots with them, which passing motorists helped fill with money donations. Sunday evening the firefighters took the donated money and purchased the gifts.
“Most of these firefighters were newer members of the fire company” Orchard Park 1st Assistant Chief Chris Couell said, “We are the busiest suburban fire company in Erie County, with our firefighters answering 2300 calls for this year, combined with the training time these firefighters put in, that alone is a huge amount of work. It makes me very proud that these firefighters gave up their weekend before Christmas to try and make a child’s holiday a little brighter, and give back a little more than they already do”.
