ZOAR VALLEY, NY ( WKBW ) The Erie County Sheriff's Air One rescue team made a dramatic rescue of a brother and sister in their 20's from Zoar Valley Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 2:05p.m., the Cattaraugus County 911 center received a cell phone call from 23 year old Mathew Aoun of Depew, N.Y. Mr. Aoun stated that he and his sister, 21 year old Emily K. Aoun of Lancaster, N.Y. were hiking and had fallen down a cliff into Zoar Valley.

Mr. Aoun was able to stop his fall by grabbing a tree, but his sister had fallen approximately 100 feet to the bottom of the gorge.

The Cattaraugus County 911 center was able to give an approximate location of Mr. Aoun based on his cell phone signal. He was located about 3 miles from the Valentine Flats parking area on the Erie County side of Cattaraugus Creek.

State Police and Gowanda Rescue personnel hiked down into the gorge while Erie County's Air 1 Helicopter airlifted medical personnel to the scene.

Emily Aoun was stabilized at the scene and then airlifted out of the gorge by Air 1. She was transferred to Mercy Flight and taken to the Erie County Medical Center. She sustained numerous injuries including a possible fractured skull, fractured femur and several lacerations.

Mr. Aoun was still stranded on the side of the cliff, approximately 30 feet from the bottom of the gorge. State Police, Forest Rangers, and rescue personnel were eventually able to get a rope to Mr. Aoun and lower him to the bottom of the gorge. Mr. Aoun was not injured.
