It’s history in the making in Niagara County, as four area health care systems dedicate a new cardiac catheterization lab.

Catholic Health, Kaleida Health, Erie County Medical Center and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center dedicated the first and only cardiac catheterization lab in Niagara County on Tuesday.

The new facility is located at The Heart Center of Niagara on Memorial's downtown Niagara Falls campus.

The $2 million dollar facility will help diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions.

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular conditions in which a long thin tube called a catheter is inserted in an artery or vein in a patient's groin, neck or arm and threaded through the blood vessels to the heart.

It’s expected to serve more than 900 patients in the first year.

Niagara Falls was lit in red Tuesday night in honor of the dedication.
