BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - New York's senior senator will keep his post in Washington, D.C., defeating his challenger in Tuesday's election by a good margin.
Democrat Charles Schumer was elected to the Senate in 1998, and has not faced a significant challenge since.

Schumer's challenger, businessman and political consultant Jay Townsend has hammered the incumbent for his positions on the stimulus and health care bills.
Schumer, who has touted his record of delivering federal funding for projects and investments in New York State, has been discussed as a possible replacement as Senate Majority Leader should fellow Democrat Harry Reid fail to win re-election.
Townsend, who has never run for office before, has made the repeal of the health care bill, the deficit and national security his main campaign topics.
Schumer leads Townsend by nearly 30 points heading into the election.
