Governor Andrew Cuomo attended the grand opening of the DoubleTree by Hilton in Niagara Falls Monday.  He took the opportunity to highlight progress in economic development the city has already seen and also spoke about plans to continue the momentum.

Cuomo discussed his plan to spend $500 million towards developing areas around Niagara Falls, including downtown.

“Downtown Niagara Falls’ resurgence continues with the new DoubleTree Hotel – a vital project which is creating good-paying jobs, driving economic opportunity, and building on the successful growth of New York’s booming tourism sector,” Governor Cuomo said. “New York State’s commitment to Niagara Falls, including the removal of underused expressway segments of the former Robert Moses Parkway, recent renovations to Niagara Falls State Park and the private-public developments in downtown, are all helping this vibrant city realize its true potential as a world-class tourist destination.”

The Governor thinks future projects like a lodge on Goat Island and plans to fund recreational activities will help draw tourists to the American side of the falls.

"We now have the hotels," he said.  "We need the activities.  With the lodge on Goat Island and an RFP for just that--creative recreational activities on this side of the Falls--you're going to see more traffic.
