SPRINGVILLE, NY (WKBW) - 16-year-old Dylan Schumaker of Springville plead not guilty Friday afternoon in Springville Village Court to murder charges. The teen is accused of beating his girlfriend's toddler to death Tuesday night.

Police say Schumaker was babysitting 23-month-old Austin Smith, his 19-year-old girlfriend's child, inside his Cochran Avenue home and struck him with severe force when the toddler started to cry.

"The mother had been kicked out of her former residence probably six weeks, two months ago and was living with the boyfriend's family," said Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard. "The 19-year-old woman and the 16-year-old male were living in the upstairs three-room apartment. The child was crying. But in fact there's no explanation for why anyone would strike a child."

The official cause of death in this case is blunt force trauma. Schumaker has been charged as an adult in this case. The 16-year-old waived his right to a felony hearing Friday, his case will now be moved to Erie County Court.
