AMHERST, NY (WKBW) The Amherst Police Department are now calling a fire in the men's department at Target on Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst "suspicious," telling Eyewitness News they have not ruled out arson as a cause.

A department spokesperson say the store had to be evacuated at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, after a pile of shorts in the men's department suddenly caught fire.

The fire was quickly contained, but heavy smoke set off the store's sprinkler system. Police say smoke and water damage are responsible for up to $5 million in damage to merchandise.

No one was injured in the fire, and a store employee says Target will likely be open again tomorrow.

Anyone who witnessed the fire or has information to provide should call the Amherst Police Department at (716) 689-1311.
