Brockport, NY (WKBW) - A female student was found dead in her dorm room on the campus of SUNY Brockport Saturday morning.
Now her boyfriend is behind bars, charged with her murder.
Police are not yet releasing the name of the victim or her cause of death, only saying she suffered "extensive trauma to the upper body."
Her body was discovered around three in the morning, after her mother called the college out of concern for her daughter's safety. The mother could not reach her daughter on her cell phone.
Students at the college remain shaken this weekend. Amanda White says "It's scary to think that could actually happen on campus here."
The entire college community is now in mourning. Police say the victim was beaten to death by her boyfriend.
Robert Kehoe, the College at Brockport Police Chief, says "It is certainly a tragic incident. It's tragic when anybody loses their life. When a young lady who is a college student and apparently in a safe environment is brutally murdered as this young lady was...it is certainly a tragedy."
21-year-old Clayton Whittemore was arrested by police at a rest-stop along Interstate 90 about an hour after the victim's body was found.
According to court documents, Whittemore allegedly admitted to causing his girlfriend's death. However, he pleaded not guilty to charges of second degree murder during an arraignment in Monroe County on Saturday.
Whittemore is not a student at SUNY Brockport.
Whittemore is currently being held without bail. He is due back in court on October 4th.
The college notified students via e-mail and online messages that a student had been found dead on-campus and that police had made an arrest.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is expected to release the victim's identity on Sunday.
College officials have made grief counselors available for students through the weekend.
They have also set-up a temporary parent hotline. That number is 585-734-3925.
