A Town of Grand Island woman was arrested on numerous charges late Friday afternoon.
Holly D. Richards, age 65, of Laurie Lane, was arrested as a result of a reckless driving complaint. Deputy Mike Okal, of the Erie County Sheriff's Grand Island sub-station, spotted Richard's vehicle east bound on Bedell Rd. She then made a left turn onto Stony Point Rd. without signaling for the turn, and also failed to yield right of way to a north bound vehicle.
Dep. Okal activated his lights and siren in an attempt to get the driver to pull over, to no avail. The driver then pulled into a parking lot where the deputy was able to pull his marked patrol unit in front of the suspect vehicle in order to get her to stop. When the driver was approached, she exhibited signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on her breath. She was given several field sobriety tests, all of which were failed. At this point, Richards was placed under arrest for D.W.I. and was transported to the sub-station for processing. She submitted to a breath test, and did register a .26% B.A.C. Due to the test results being .18% or higher, she was charged with a count of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated. A D.M.V. computer check revealed that she had two prior convictions for driving while intoxicated, on two separate dates, in two jurisdictions. Due to this, the arrest was elevated to Felony status.
Richards was transported to the Erie County Holding Center to be held pending her arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court. Deputy Okal was assisted by Deputy Angela Kopacz. The defendant's vehicle was towed and a 12 hour hold was placed on it.
This is the 124th arrest for D.W.I. made by the Erie County Sheriff's Office in 2013.
