ELMA, N.Y. (WKBW) - An Elma man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a child.
Police arrested 45-year-old Gary Mathews Monday. Police say submerged a 15-year-old child's hands into bleach for approximately ten minutes to punish her.
As of April 10th, Mathews is being additionally charged with two more counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and also Assault.
The new assault charge stems from the allegation that when Mathews forced the female child’s hands in the bleach, a family member attempted to intervene on behalf of the child and was punched in the face by him.
Additionally, Mathews refused to render medical assistance to the child victim for five days, following the incident. Mathews remains at the Erie County Holding Center on no bail.
The 15-year-old victim has been transferred from Women’s and Children’s Hospital to ECMC’s burn unit, where she remains in stable condition and continues to be treated for her injuries.
The investigation into this matter continues by the State Police and Child Protective Services.
