BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Federal authorities and local police are warning drug users about a potent and potentially deadly heroin mixture that has shown up throughout the area.

"The economics of drug traffickers are pretty simple. They sell drugs so that they can make money," said DEA Resident in Charge Dale Kasprzyk.

He said someone is circulating a mix of heroin and the prescription painkiller fentanyl, which has already been linked to three area deaths.

What we're telling you is that it's so strong that it's killing people," said Kasprzyk.

Federal agents have already arrested Peter Militello, 32, of Tonawanda as one of the alleged sources of the tainted heroin. He is accused of selling the drug to a Buffalo man, Robert Runfola, who died recently.

"If in fact the medical professionals can prove that that drug substantially caused the death of Mr. Runfola... who would normally be in court facing a lower charge will then face very, very serious charges," which bring a possible prison term of life behind bars, Hochul said.

So far, six individuals have been connected with taking the deadly mix, four overdosed and three of them died.

"This substance is out there in the drug trafficking community right now. We've seen it in Buffalo. We've seen it in the southern suburbs. We've seen it in the northern suburbs," Kasprzyk said.
