Consumers Stretching Their Dollars

Consumers have given some of the nation's
retailers a little relief following months of dismal sales.

Early sales reports show that shoppers bought basic goods at
discounters and wholesale clubs last month. Wal-Mart and Costco are
among the top performers. Both retailers have reported higher sales
gains than had been expected for April.

However, the retail spike could come at the expense of
first-quarter earnings. Brisk business was helped along by heavy
discounting at the stores.

Meanwhile, most mall-based apparel stores continue to struggle.
Their merchandise falls into the discretionary category. One
analyst says consumers are "stretching their dollars" by focusing
on value.

Analysts expect a modest uptick in sales next month and in June
as consumers spend tax rebate pay
