The rate of unemployment fell in the Buffalo Niagara region in the final month of 2011, falling to 7.9 percent compared to 8.1 percent previous year.

That put the local jobless rate below both the statewide average (8.0 percent) and the national average (8.3 percent).

Rochester had an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent last month, down from 7.8 percent in December 2010.

The average for Upstate New York's 52 counties was 7.8 percent, down from 8.1 percent year-over-year, according to the state Department of Labor.
