Wegmans Food Markets has confirmed it will be bringing a third store to the Boston market.

The Rochester-based supermarket chain said by 2013 it will be opening a 70,000-square-foot store in Newton, Mass. The store is a smaller version of the larger, 140,000-square-foot Wegmans that the chain typically builds. All of its Western New York stores are at least 120,000-square-feet.

The Newton store is part of smaller footprint and design that Wegmans may be offering at other sites.

The Newton location will join one that is already open in Northborough and one that is planned for Burlington. Both localities are suburbs to Boston.

Wegmans is building the store on the site of a one-time Omni Foods supermarket that closed in 2006. Located along Route 9, Wegmans will anchor a new, 160,000-square-foot plaza.
