The former Highland Elementary School in the City of Tonawanda will soon be the site of People Inc's newest senior housing project.
In a multi-phased deal, The City of Tonawanda School District sold the vacant elementary school to S Spoth LLC, a West Seneca-based investment group, with S Spoth LLC immediately putting the property under contract to People Inc. S Spoth paid $152,000 for the two-story, 27,983-square-foot early 1920s era building that was auctioned off in February by Cash Realty & Auctions on behalf of the school district.
The deal between the school district and S Spoth LLC closed Tuesday morning.
Rhonda Frederick, People Inc. spokesperson, confirmed the agency will redevelop the school, located on Highland Avenue, into a 50-unit senior housing complex. It will be People Inc's 19th senior housing complex in the region.
"We do have a contract to purchase the school, but it is contingent on us receiving the necessary federal funding," Frederick said.
People Inc. applied for a $4.5 million grant under the federal Housing and Urban Development 202 program that will finance the project. People Inc. is waiting for final word from HUD to see if the funding application was granted.
The City of Tonawanda School District closed Highland Elementary School in 2009 and shifted students enrolled there to the Fletcher Elementary School.
