It is Ash Wednesday. The start of Lent marks the start of the popular fish fry season in WNY. A longtime company has a new twist on the traditional favorite. Federal Meats, which was founded back in 1930, claims it has WNY's only rotisserie roasted fish fry.
Hamburg store manager Rick Howell says they start with battered or breaded fish and let it slowly roast for 35 minutes. Federal got started with the idea ten years ago and then Lent quickly went from a slow season to a very busy one!
"For years, Lent was always a boring time of year for us. We used to stand around as butchers," Howell said. "But when you start cooking with a rotisserie like we did, we started cooking a lot of foods off and got the idea for cooking some fish."
Besides the traditional beer battered or breaded fish, Federal is taking things further with flavors like cajun tilapia or smokey applewood salmon. They can make 30 every 35 minutes. The fish is served at all ten Federal Meats locations, but they do recommend calling ahead to place an order.
The battered fish is $8.99 and includes your choice of two sides and bread.
