Students are back to hitting the books and school districts are crunching numbers. School district budgets are getting a lot of attention this year, as districts try to do more with less.
Business First researchers say Western New York's leanest school district is Lancaster, which spends the least: $12,821 per pupil. The district still scores well academically.
Researchers also looked at poverty rates and academic scores to see which districts are beating the odds to make the grade. Business First researchers say Sherman is the biggest overachiever. One out of every three children there lives below the poverty line, but Sherman scores higher than 64% of area districts.
