An educator from Erie, Pa. has been hired to become Niagara University's new vice president of academic affairs.

Timothy Downs, dean of the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences at Gannon University, will begin his new job June 13, NU announced Monday.

Bonnie Rose, executive vice president, has juggled both roles since 2004. She will now focus exclusively on her executive vice president position.

Downs will be responsible for developing the university's academic programs, diversifying the student population and increase NU's national and international profile. He previously served as dean of graduate studies and research at Emporia State University and assistant vice president for academic affairs at California State University in Los Angeles.

He received an undergraduate degree in communication studies from California State University in Sacramento and an undergraduate degree in the same field from West Virginia University. He earned a doctorate in organizational community from the University of Oklahoma.
