A new team of physicians will begin staffing the Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital emergency room, effective Sept. 1.

Kaleida Health, parent of Millard Suburban, has signed a contract with FDR Medical Services of Orchard Park, expanding a relationship with DeGraff Memorial Hospital that began in 2008. The company also provides emergency department coverage at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, and the ExcelCare Urgent Care Center in Rochester.

Coverage for the department at Millard Suburban has been provided by Professional Emergency Services (PES) of Cheektowaga. The organization will continue to provide emergency services coverage for Kaleida in the downtown core for its Buffalo General Medical Center and the adjoining Gates Vascular Institute (GVI) in partnership with University Emergency Medical Services.

The idea is to unify emergency department physician coverage and create more synergies in the Northtowns sites, while keeping PES in the downtown area, said Christopher Lane, president of both hospitals.

Kaleida unified management of the two hospitals earlier this year, and shifted its infusion center from Millard Suburban to DeGraff last month.

Lane said that having FDR handle both sites follows that model, while leading to increased physician coverage and better coordination of patient care.

Scott Belote, one of three partners at FDR, will serve as director of emergency services at Millard Suburban.
