Allegiant Travel Co., the Las Vegas-based parent of Allegiant Airlines, is reporting large gains in passenger traffic.

Niagara Falls is part of Allegiant's system with several flights a week leaving Niagara Falls International Airport for destinations in Florida. Allegiant began service in Niagara Falls earlier this year and is considering adding more routes and destinations to its local offerings.

According to information released by Allegiant, the low-cost, limited frills air carrier reported handling 616,570 passengers in its system during June, a 7.3 percent increase from June 2010 when its system handled 574,799 passengers.

In May, the airline handled 1,245 outbound passengers at Niagara Falls International Airport - roughly 71 percent of all of the airport's passenger activity.

For the full second quarter, Allegiant handled 1.79 million passengers in its system compared with 1.55 million for the same period last year. That translates to a 15.1 percent hike.
