Buffalo is moving up in a new economic report and holding its own in U.S. economic standings. The Buffalo Niagara area ranks 31st in December's On Numbers economic index. That means Buffalo remains in the upper third of the monthly index, which measures the economic health of 102 major markets.
December's rating is actually five places better than November, when Buffalo was 36th. Researchers look at 18 factors for the monthly report, including private sector job growth, unemployment, construction and retail activity.
Austin grabbed first place in the December rankings, pushing Oklahoma City to second place. Private-sector jobs in Austin are up 8% in the past five years, the fastest pace in America. Unemployment is at 5 percent there, while home values are up 4%.
Rounding out the top five this month are Houston, Columbus and Omaha. All three have made the top ten since August.
