Area Colleges Look To Boost Enrollment

BUFFALO, NY ( Business First ) This could be a good year for Erie Community College or it could be "a financial mess," according to a report in this week's Business First. It shows how ECC is hoping to make up for a seven percent decline in fall enrollment by boosting numbers in 2012. The report says area colleges are all facing challenges like a decline in the high school students, which means fewer students to recruit and enroll, along with increased competition at local, national and international levels and rising tuition. Some say those pressures could force colleges to develop new partnerships or possibly merge down the road.

Local tech company Five Nine Group is going after the pro athlete industry. The founders say online searches for pro athletes usually turn up Wikipedia or fan websites so Five Nine Group is creating websites for athletes, especially NHL players. They are complete with fan updates and charitable giving.
The founders say their sites can also lead to more opportunities and some offline sponsorships. Five Nine Group is named for NYS Thruway exit 59, since the founders went to SUNY Fredonia.
