Local home sales soared in August. The Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors says sales jumped 45 percent compared to August 2010. That's a big improvement, but it is also the second lowest total for August in the past decade. For the year, home sales are down about six percent compared to 2010 levels.
Realtors say average prices are down, while median prices, and new and active listings are up.

There's talk of adding a giant electronic message board on the waterfront to help promote events at the Central Wharf and downtown Buffalo. A report in this week's Business First shows how the idea came up at a meeting with the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. and Buffalo Place. Activities and progress reports are posted online now, but signage could notify people on the streets and out-of-towners who are visiting. The Buffalo Sabres are installing a huge electronic message board at First Niagara Center. You can read more in Jim Fink's column in this week's Business First.
