Dog Ears Bookstore on Abbott Road is expanding and feeding hungry customers after nearly five years in business. Dog Ears, on Abbott Road, features books for children and adults, with many titles by local authors.
The original adjoining café closed last year and now Dog Ears is operating a new café as part of a nonprofit fundraising effort for its Literary Arts Center.
Café manager Bridget English says visitors will find newly renovated space, and an open floor plan, "We want people to come in and feel comfortable and spend time here. We have wifi, people have meetings here with friends and business meetings. Other people just sit over a cup of tea or coffee with a fresh baked scone."
But Executive Director Tom McDonnell says there is a purpose behind the business, "It matters. The funds we raise through the sale of books, coffee and food pays for upstairs. It stays in the building."
Upstairs, you will find the Literary Arts Center, which provides educational programs centered around literacy, with reading and comprehension, for the young and old. "There's something here for everybody," McDonnell said. "We have programs for people of all ages. We concentrate mostly on children because we want to get them hooked and build their libraries for life."
If you want to check out what the facility offers, the café's grand opening is Saturday, January 12 from noon to 6 p.m.
So far, English says feedback has been good. "It's been very positive," she said. "People are happy to have the business open again, in the first place serving the community and because we don't have anything like it here."
