Business First is addressing an eyesore in the heart of downtown Buffalo. The 500 block of Main Street is the focus of a new report in today's Business First.

The report calls the area between Lafayette Square and the Hyatt "shabby." It says the eyesore has cost the city conventions and stirred negative national publicity.

Paul Snyder Sr., who owns the Hyatt, tells Business First the 500 block "is our single biggest negative." In recent years, he has invested nearly $20 million in renovations to the
hotel. But look out the hotel windows and you see derelict storefronts with "for sale" signs.

The report says half of the 30 buildings on the 500 block have been sold or are being sold.

Some business owners have purchased Main Street sites in auctions with no real development plans.

Mayor Byron Brown has approved $4 million for new construction since 2008, but many say it will take traffic on the 500 block to truly turn things around. That is likely three to five years away.

You can find the full report in today's Business First with photos and details on each individual property.
