Workers at Niagara Lutheran Home & Rehabilitation Center have voted to unionize, joining 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.
An organizing campaign began in March for the 93 certified nursing assistants, with a secret-ballot election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board. Employees voted June 28 to join the union.
According to SEIU, the employees will now elect an employee bargaining committee, select leadership and begin assessing the needs of co-workers. Negotiating with management on a collective bargaining agreement will follow.
The Buffalo nursing home, part of Niagara Lutheran Health System, is located at 64 Hager St.
SEIU 1199 represents over 4,200 nursing home workers at 37 facilities in Western New York.
