LA Fitness, one of the nation's largest health club chains, is close to opening at least four locations in the immediate Buffalo Niagara region.
The California-based chain is reportedly close to opening health clubs near Delaware and Hertel avenues in North Buffalo, the Boulevard Consumer Square Plaza on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst, the Eastgate Plaza on Transit Road in Clarence and McKinley Parkway in Hamburg near the McKinley Mall. Each site will be in the 45,000-square-foot range and include a number of state-of-the-art fitness and work out facilities.
The four locations may be open by mid 2012, according to multiple real estate and municipal sources.
LA Fitness has been scouting the Buffalo area for the past few years. The chain currently has 340 locations in the U.S. and Canada.
The Buffalo Niagara region would be among its first in New York state as it is eyeing sites in the Rochester and Albany markets.
The closest LA Fitness location to Buffalo is in Brampton, Ont. as well as one in Toronto and Kitchener, Ont.
Officials from LA Fitness could not be reached for comment.
