WNY's aging population has nonprofit groups scrambling to feed those in need. A report in this week's Business First shows how WNY is aging at a fast rate. One of the fastest-growing age groups is 85 and older. Last week, Meals on Wheels for WNY Inc. delivered Meal number 25 million. The president and CEO says the increased need for senior services is alarming. Meals on Wheels is growing at a rate of 5 percent a year. The Food Bank of WNY agrees that seniors represent a growing population of individuals seeking assistance from food pantries in the region with numbers jumping by more than 1200 this year.

Erie County's senior population is definitely growing. More than 200,000 residents are over age 60, while 38 percent of that senior population is age 75-plus. That's compared to 34 percent for the state average and 32.5 percent in the nation.
