Go into any store and you know how hard it is to find clothing made in the USA. A local entrepreneur is hoping to change that with the latest line of Frankie Scott USA - patriotic clothing made right in the USA, with 75 percent of the designs made right in Western New York.
After working in the screen printing and textile industry for five years, Joe Wright was fed up after looking for a 4th of July shirt and seeing them made in India. When Olympic athletes received uniforms made overseas, that was the last straw.
"I think if you want to use the flag, at least put it on something American-made," Wright said. "A lot of men and women have died for that flag and I think we owe it to this country to use more American-made products."
Wright took his knowledge from the clothing business and began his own line in 2012. He named it Frankie Scott USA after Francis Scott Key who wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
"I figured there had to be a need for fashionably patriotic clothing," Wright said. "Something you can wear everyday that looks good, feels good and is made right in the United States."
But Wright says these aren't your typical designs. "I did a lot of research on patriotic clothing," he said. "The thing is, it was all the same. It was all bald eagles on black t-shirts. There's nothing wrong with that, but I want something Americans can wear everyday because we're American everyday and patriotic everyday."
Frankie Scott USA clothing is sold at area stores like Basics at the Southgate Plaza or Aurora Outfitters in East Aurora, where customers often hope to find made in the USA items. "More and more people will look at tags," said Zack Jaworski, who owns Aurora Outfitters. "They'll flip up the shirts and try to see where it's made. It's not surprising when they see it's made out of the U.S. But when they see it's made in the U.S., it is usually a happy surprise."
Jaworski carries several Frankie Scott designs and hopes to add a full line when Aurora Outfitters expands at a new location this August on Main Street in East Aurora. The store will triple its space and will feature Frankie Scott USA's fall and back to school line.
As for Wright, he hopes Frankie Scott USA will become a popular all-American brand.
