A bit of Niagara Falls, Ont., history has melted away.
Crews have melted the ice at Niagara Falls Memorial Arena for the last time. The 60-year-old building is one of three rinks being closed this spring and replaced by the $35 million, four-pad Gale Centre, which opens next month in Niagara Falls.
Ice was also removed from the Jack Bell Arena and within the next few weeks, the Stamford Memorial Arena will also close for the last time.
But, it is the Niagara Falls Memorial Arena that holds the most history - at least from a hockey perspective.
The rink was home to the Niagara Falls Flyers, and later, the Niagara Falls Thunder, whose rosters included the likes of Derek Sanderson, Jim Schoenfeld, Don Lever and Ethan Moreau all played their last years of junior hockey at the rink.
Most recently, it was home to the Niagara Falls Canucks of the Ontario Junior B Hockey League.
