Tonawanda has been selected to host this summer what organizers call the largest synchronized swimming competition in the world.
An announcement made Tuesday through the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission said the Tonawanda Aquettes will host United States Synchronized Swimming's 2010 eSynchro Age Group Championships at the Town of Tonawanda Aquatic and Fitness Center.
The competition, scheduled from June 25 to July 3, will bring 1,200 swimmers, ages 11 to 19, along with family members, coaches and officials, from across the country to Western New York. More than 300 local volunteers will assist with the event.
"We are proud to host such a prestigious event," said Paul Bostaph, Tonawanda Aquettes board president . "It's a testament to both the high level of synchronized swimming in our community and the quality of our facilities."
Synchronized swimming bills itself as the ultimate team sport.
The final day of competition will feature "Pink the Pool 2010," a tribute to the fight against breast cancer, with funds raised to benefit breast cancer research.
