As expected, Erie County Medical Center was approved to go ahead with a $22 million renal disease and transplant center.

The Center of Excellence for Renal Disease and Transplant will bring together the transplant programs from ECMC with Kaleida Health's programs, with $7.5 million in funding coming from the Health Care Efficiency and Affordability Law of New York State (HEAL NY).

The project received final approval at the April 8 meeting of the State Hospital Review & Planning Council.

Plans call for a new outpatient renal clinical services program; a new inpatient renal services and transplant program on ECMC's 10th floor to accommodate 120-150 transplants annually; and a translational research initiative.

The project is a collaboration with the University at Buffalo School of Medicine & Biomedical Science and the UB School of Pharmacy research programs.
