There's a doctor shortage that's growing across the U.S. and in WNY. That's the focus of a new report in today's Business First.
It says, a national shortage of 124,000 full-time physicians is expected by 2025. In New York, a shortfall of 2,500 to 17,000 physicians is expected by 2030. WNY is projected to have a shortfall of about 153 physicians. The University at Albany says WNY's declining population could make the situation worse because there are fewer physicians to go around and the places that are hardest hit are places that are unpopular. Multiple recruitment efforts are now underway by several organizations who say growth on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus could help lure prospective employees here.
The economy is leading to cutbacks at the corporate training center at Niagara County Community College. Officials say companies are downsizing and tightening corporate budgets and there's been a slowdown in requests for computer training and professional development so those classes will be offered less regularly at NCCC as part of a "restructuring" plan.
