Marking 75 Years as a Voice for Working Women

Eyewitness News reports that the Tonawanda city school board has voted to close Highland Elementary School at the end of the current school year. The move would reportedly save the district $500,000 a year. Most of the staff is expected to be absorbed into other schools, while the district also will offer a retirement incentive. Highland is noted for strong math scores. The school ranked 57th out of 289 elementary schools in the most recent Business First school rankings.

A local women's group has reached a milestone. The Buffalo Amherst chapter of Business and Professional Women is celebrating its 75th year anniversary. The chapter was founded back in 1934, when a box of corn flakes was 8 cents and a gallon of gas ten cents. Back then, women made up about a quarter of the workforce, now they account for about half. Business and Professional Women serves as an advocate for working women.
