We've heard how Holy Angels Academy is closing its doors. Is it a sign of things to come? That's the focus of a report in today's Business First. Consultants in the education sector predict that more private and public schools will close, from elementary through high schools, because the area can't afford the huge infrastructure these school systems have. The report notes that population has decreased in Erie County by nearly 200,000 people in the past 40 years. High school graduates are expected to decline 16.5 percent by 2019 and women of childbearing age are on the decline, along with suburban populations.
A report in today's Business First shows how the need for expanded patient care is fueling a proposed 34,000-square-foot expansion at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. Business First says Kaleida Health filed plans with the Amherst Planning Board, which is expected to review the project June 20. The state would also have to approve the plan which calls for a new three story section of the hospital. This would be the first expansion at Suburban since the emergency room got revamped more than four years ago.
