Today marked the first day of school for many WNY students. Some districts like Orchard Park will head back to school on Thursday. Since it is back to school week, we are taking a look at the Business First Guide to WNY Schools to see which districts are making the grade.

Business First ranks area school districts and individual schools every year. This year, with cutbacks in state funding and budget issues, there is a lot of pressure on schools to do more with less.

Elementary school Christ the King, in Amherst, takes the number one title among elementary schools in WNY when it comes to state testing. Principal Samuel Zalacca says that achievement is possible, even with limited resources. "In a way, working with a limited budget is a good thing because I think it helps people take ownership of what is here and pride in what is here, in the facilities and the buildings," he said. "Put all of that together and those ingredients make for a successful, vibrant school."

Business First also issues subject awards in four areas: English-Foreign Languages, Math, Science and Social Studies. Only five districts, out of nearly 100, received awards in all four categories. They are: Bemus Point, East Aurora, Iroquois, Orchard Park and Williamsville.

You can get more details on area schools in the Business First Guide to WNY Schools.
