Business First is out with its 3rd annual list of Healthiest Employers. The companies were recognized at a fit celebration yesterday at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Independent Health threw t-shirt prizes into the crowd before leading hundreds of people in an exercise routine that you can do at your desk each day.
Wegmans got the crowd involved in games and designed a healthy lunch for the event.
Forty companies made the list of Healthiest Employers. John Rodgers with Independent Health says employers can lower their health insurance costs with a healthier workforce. "Your healthcare costs are often based on how healthy your workforce is and so doing exercise, eating right and maintaining a good weight is a good way to keep your healthcare costs down," he said.
Rodgers says companies who are interested in a wellness program should talk to their health insurance carriers. Just a small effort goes a long way and employees often participate willingly in wellness programs that also boost their morale.
"There's only so many things an employer can do to help manage their healthcare costs and one of them is to have a healthier workforce," he said. "Most employers in WNY have talked about it. The group in this room today have done something about it to actually reduce their costs."
