TOWN OF PORTLAND, N.Y. (WKBW) - Local vineyards are being hurt by the rough winter.

As the snow continues to fall, the profits for local farmers here in Chautauqua County are falling too.

The wine business accounts for more than seventy five percent of the economy in the area.

Mike Jordan, of Olde Chautauqua Farms in the Town of Portland, says this is the worst winter he has experienced in about 10 years.

It is the big moneymaker, the grape crop, that is being hit the hardest.

Jordan says he'll experience a 70 percent loss in profits compared to last year because so much of his crop has been damaged by mother nature.

Senator Schumer will be in Chautauqua County on Monday asking for the USDA to provide disaster assistance to these farmers.
