Eighty-three high school seniors from New York's 16 westernmost counties have been named National Merit Scholarship seminfinalists.

The local honorees are among 16,000 U.S. semifinalists announced this morning by National Merit Scholarship Corp.

Twenty-six of this year's National Merit semifinalists are from the eight counties of Western New York, while 57 are from the eight-county Rochester Area.

National Merit Scholarship Corp. has run its national awards program since 1955. The 2013-2014 semifinalists were chosen from an initial pool of 1.5 million U.S. students who took last year's PSAT/NMSQT, a qualifying test.

The semifinalists remain in the hunt for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, which are worth about $35 million. Recipients will be notified next spring.

This year's semifinalists attend 15 high schools in Western New York and 21 in the Rochester Area. One local honoree is home schooled.
