National Merit Scholarship Corp. has run its national awards program since 1955. The 2013-2014 semifinalists were chosen from an initial pool of 1.5 million U.S. students who took last year's PSAT/NMSQT, a qualifying test.
The semifinalists remain in the hunt for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, which are worth about $35 million. Recipients will be notified next spring.
This year's semifinalists attend 15 high schools in Western New York and 21 in the Rochester Area. One local honoree is home schooled.
