A tight economy has a lot of businesses keeping a close eye on energy consumption. A report in this week's Business First shows how energy is one place that your business can save money and it pays to shop around. Experts say to analyze your energy needs, either by yourself or hire a consultant. National Grid says to consider your current rate and usage and then compare energy suppliers. They say to beware of hidden fees in long term contracts..

Ford Motor Company is installing energy efficient LED lighting at the Woodlawn Stamping Plant. It's part of a $2.7 million project. National Grid just awarded Ford with a record $1.4 million grant for the project.

If you want to lower energy costs at the workplace, experts say a good place to start is with the lighting. They say to switch to compact fluorescent bulbs and find a lighting rebate. Another tip is to minimize paper consumption by printing less. Then remember to turn of machines at night and to lower demands on heating and cooling systems.
