One of WNY's sweetest secrets is boosting business in Cattaraugus. Sticks for Tootsie Pops, Dum-Dums and Charms Blow Pops are made right here in WNY. Setterstix Corp., in Cattaraugus, makes 25 million sucker sticks each day. The company dates back to 1938 and most of its business is sticks used for lollipops. Setterstix machines turn millions of pounds of paper into sucker sticks. The company employs 47 and operations have become more efficient in recent years. So ten employees had to be laid of last year.
A report in this week's Business First says the $13 million company is looking to grow by exporting. They distribute in Mexico and ship to South America, New Zealand and Australia.
Dash's Market is celebrating its 90th anniversary in WNY. Dash's grocery roots date back to 1923 on Buffalo's east side.
Joe Dash's grandparents started that business and his father was born in the back room of the store. Now Joe is carrying on the grocery tradition. Dash's market at Hopkins and Klein in East Amherst just got a makeover. The store's market side café is complete with a piece of WNY history. The last wooden ice boom from the Niagara River is the ceiling of the café. Dash's other locations are in Clarence, Buffalo and Tonawanda. Future expansions are possible.
