Mike's Homemade Candies has been a fixture at 2110 Clinton Street near the city line for more than 40 years. Before that, the candy shop was located on Sycamore for about ten years.

The late founder, Mike, learned his trade in Greece where he made Greek and European candies.

He came to the U.S. in the late 50s and continued working in the candy industry until he could open his own business.

Now, it is a family affair at Mike's as his wife Anna Melithoniotes, daughter Susan and her daughter and grand daughter, and other family members, cherish the sweet roots that Mike's is founded on.

"We never changed our chocolate, first of all," said Anna. "All of those years, we get it from the same place and try to keep it the same."

That means no machinery or production line. "We dip chocolate everyday by hand. We cook our own sponge here and cut it everyday and dip it by hand," explained Susan Walter. "We have milk chocolate, orange chocolate, dark chocolate. It keeps us busy everyday."

One of the unique treats at Mike's is flavored sponge candy with white chocolate (over the holidays) and raspberry sponge candy.

Mike's was even featured in Gourmet Magazine and in the book Road Crew.
