An expanded health clinic on Buffalo's East Side is two steps closer to reality.

Both Sisters of Charity Hospital and the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine received word from the state Department of Health on their plans to seek certification of services at 1500 Broadway. The facility is under renovations to become the Erie County Medical Mall.

The DOH acknowledged UB Dental clinic's plans to open an extension clinic for the Daniel Squire Oral Diagnostic & Treatment Center. The extension clinic on Broadway will include six chairs, expanding access to such services as fillings and repairs. Plans call for possibility adding dental hygiene at a later date based on demand.

Sisters of Charity is shifting its St. Vincent Health Center clinic from 1595 Bailey Ave. to expanded space at the site. The hospital filed its plans in November, and received contingent approval from the state in late January. Plans call for opening 20 exam rooms to offer primary care, OB-GYN prenatal services, a blood draw lab and physical, occupational and speech therapies.

Both providers are working with Erie County to bring new life to the former Dr. Matt Gajewski Health Services Center. Two behavioral health providers also have plans to offer services: Lake Shore Behavioral Health and Mid-Erie Mental Health Services.

The facility is expected to open this spring.
