Rural/Metro to continue services after bankruptcy filing

August 5, 2013 Updated Aug 5, 2013 at 11:30 AM EDT

Rural/Metro Corp., a nationwide ambulance operator that serves that Buffalo area, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Bloomberg reports that the company will continue to provide emergency services.

Rural/Metro, which is based in Arizona, missed a mid-July interest payment on unsecured bonds. That triggered a downgrade in its Standard and Poor's debt and credit ratings.

The company listed assets and debts of more than $500 million apiece in papers filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.
