The chairman of anesthesiology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute has won the highest honor given by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Mark Lema received the ASA's Distinguished Service Award on Monday at the group's annual meeting in Chicago. The award is given in recognition of "lifetime achievements and service in the specialty of anesthesiology."

Lema is currently the chairman of Roswell's Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. He also is a professor of anesthesiology at the University at Buffalo.

Lema served as the ASA's president in 2007 and as its newsletter editor from 1997 to 2003.
