Developer/restaurateur Mark Croce says the facade work on his Statler City project will start soon.
The key to starting the work was securing $5.3 million in state aid for the facade work on the 18-story landmark that overlooks Niagara Square. The state funds have now been released.
Croce's next step is to put the project out to bid. He wants to have the bids awarded and work underway by late summer.
"My goal is to have the scaffolding down before the end of the year," Croce said. "It will give people a much better perspective of what I'm trying to do at the Statler."
Croce bought the aging landmark in 2011. He immediately revived the building's main ballroom and Terrace Room as special-events centers.
Plans for the upper floors remain in review.
"I want the Statler to come back to life in a way that people expect," Croce said.
