Expanding U.S. business is prompting a Canadian firm to add more space and workers to its Batavia operations.

Koolatron Corp. confirmed it will be nearly doubling the size of its warehouse and workforce in Batavia. Company officials said its warehouse will be expanded from 25,000-square-feet to 45,000-square-feet and, once the project is done, Koolatron hopes to see its local workforce increase from 10 employees to 20 workers.

"Our business keeps growing and we can barely keep up with the warehouse space we have right now," said Arun Kulkarni, Koolatron president.

The $775,000 project aided by an incentive package approved by the Genesee County Economic Development Center directors.

Koolatron makes and distributes a number of different items ranging from 12-volt coolers to Pants Savers-branded car mats, Biteshield-branded mosquito and pest repellent products. It also contracts with Michelin to make various auto care products and Coca-Cola to manufacture and distribute personal refrigerators.

Many of Koolatron's products are sold via e-commerce through deals it was with such retailers as Amazon, Costco, Home Depot and Sam's Club.

Kulkarni said business has grown more than 30 percent during the past five years and that is prompting the need to expand the Batavia warehouse. The warehouse is located on Commerce Drive, not far from the New York State Thruway.

Batavia, where Koolatron has been located since 1978 under various ownership groups, is considered a key, central location for the company.

"Batavia is the perfect gateway in which to build up our U.S. shipping hub," Kulkarni said.

Koolatron is headquartered in Brantford, Ont.

Besides the Batavia warehouse, it also has a sales office in Orlando.
