The Southgate Plaza is in the process of being sold. A report in today's Business First says Southgate Associates, a local investment group, is purchasing the plaza on Union Road from the estate of Carl Lambein, who built it in 1954. He died three years ago. Southgate is the 8th largest shopping center in WNY. It is nearly 100 percent occupied with 53 stores. The report says Southgate Associates will continue the customer-friendly atmosphere at the plaza, which is considered one of its strongest points.
A report in today's Business First looks at the challenges of Buffalo's new school superintendent. Pamela Brown wants to save the system by focusing on student performance, everything from analyzing data to developing programs that work. That sounds obvious, but a state report says the administration has a culture of compliance, rather than support to schools. The district has 34,000 students. The graduation rate is under 50%. Brown wants to reach 80% in five years. The Buffalo School District ranks last in the Business First annual rankings.
